Coming soon to a defenseless Beetle R-Line near you!

I’m predicting some wayward handling characteristics. I don’t think I see a good way of making that a solid enough assembly to even think about driving a car with doubled up top mounts.

Both mounts have a metal “skeleton” inside them, and will be held together by top grade bolts and the weight of the chassis compressing them.

I’m aware of the construction of those mounts. I have very similar, if not the exact same ones on my car.
I assume you’re planning on putting together the strut assembly as normal and putting a second top mount in between it and the strut tower when you put the strut in the car, putting longer screws through each of the three mounting holes of both top mounts?
Under lateral (cornering) loads, those bolts will be under much more tension than they would if the top mount was flush with the strut tower as it should be and the stack will also apply a bending load. With the relatively small diameter of those screws, I expect they will break. Regardless of how high grade of a bolt you use.
You also won’t be able to pull those top mounts together with those bolts in the first place because the holes in both are threaded. When the first top mount is tight to the inside of the strut tower, that’s as tight as you’ll be able to make them. Keep going in an effort to pull the second up tight to the first and you’ll strip the thread in the first mount or break the bolt. If you can’t or don’t get them tight, there will be play in the whole assembly, they will move around while driving, fatigue and then break.
I don’t think I can overstate how bad of an idea I think this is.

How’s it going man, hope I’m not bothering you, but I’ve got a few more questions about tuning my car?
Thanks

Go ahead man. I was actually going through my mailbox the other day and came across your old emails about the Allroad. I was thinking about emailing you to see if you needed anything or had any questions but I didn’t want you thinking I was trying to be salesy haha. Whats up?

Appreciate it! I wouldn’t mind the occasional email at all! I’m always interested in new parts!
So, I’ve gotten back into wanting to tune the Jetta after a buddy of mine got a full Stage 2 Mk4 GTI with the 1.8t and that car pretty much showed me how much fun a tuned car could be.
This time however, I’m hoping to get slightly above stock Mk7 GTI numbers hopefully, but I don’t want to void the warranty at the same time. I’m thinking of a Forge BOV, CTS Turbo exhaust and a Neuspeed Power module and a Carbonio intake. What do ya think?
I’m also not so sure about mixing/matching parts from different companies. Eg: APR intake and Neuspeed power module.
Thanks!

There’s nothing wrong with mixing and matching parts. I’ve got an APR tune and a USP intake. Downpipe will probably be some third brand haha.
And I’m not a fan of the power module design. It usually ends up not giving the same gains as an on-board tune, but more headaches. If you’re worried about warranty, you can always revert your tune before you visit the dealer.
Also, you’re not going to need to upgrade your DV. The stock ones on gen 3 cars are bulletproof up till completely stupid power levels.

Ah, gotcha. Doesn’t the tune leave traces on the ECU though?
So for the APR tune, you said the 87 would work fine with the stock clutch right?
I just like BOV sounds, haha.

The flash resets the flash counter when you go back to stock. So they really have no way to tell other than looking at the hardware changes you make.
And yeah 87 should play nicely with your stock clutch for a while. But it’s gonna have to be changed out eventually.

Ah, gotcha. Any updates on a better clutch being released?
Any popular mods you see on gen 3 1.8t cars that you’d recommend?

There’s no official release information on the clutch yet. But for all intents and purposes the dev and testing are done.
Power-wise, most people usually just do stage 2 for the 1.8T. Intake, downpipe, and tune. I recommend either an APR, a USP, or AWE downpipe. And AWE released a whole exhaust suite for the facelifted Jetta. Beyond that, it’s all gonna be about suspension/drivetrain mods, and those are gonna be more taste-based than anything. I will say though, come in for one of those 034 inserts, they are definitely worth it.

Oooh, I just gave that AWE exhaust suite and it looks promising. Good prices also. Sounds a bit on the quiet side though.
I’m probably going to keep the stock suspension so it’s usable, maybe some VWR springs or something down the line though. I’m going to focus on power first.
So for the 87 tune, does that have anything to do with the grade of gas you use? I’ve always been confused by that.

The AWE exhaust isn’t really quiet. Its subdued if you get a Touring system. But Track is loud.
VWR makes too quality springs. But you gotta decide if you actually wanna change the ride, or just the height. Remember: springs = height, shocks/struts = ride.
And the 87 tune means it can run on anything 87octane and up.

Gotcha, I’ll definitely have that on my wishlist.
Probably VMR springs on stock struts is what I’ll be going for. I’d rather not go back to the Conestoga wagon style ride quality.
Ahhh, that makes sense about the 87. I’ll be in touch when I decide to go for a tune. If the clutch will last me 10,000 miles of DC traffic and 30,000 miles of barely any traffic on the 87 tune, I’ll be happy. Within the next year or so I’ll be moving to the middle of nowhere, so I’ll have to make it out to NGP at some point depending on how everything goes.

You didn’t hear this from me. But ordering has opened for clutches for Mk6 1.8Ts, and list on them is 728.18 for a Stage 2 Daily. We may or may not be ordering a couple for stock already...

Just one of those AWE Tuning exhausts you sent me to yesterday or whatever it was.

I think for something like that, youd be looking around 350 for that.

Installation on an intake by itself is 117.24. But we have a deal right now that if you get software and an intake together, install is free on both. I would just have to get a gen 3 intake adapter shipped down from MD for you.

Sounds like a good deal! I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks!
I’m working some funky hours, and need to take the car into the dealer for some warranty work before I get to fun stuff. Reverse gear clunking and grinding namely, along with having them adress a few rattles that I can’t identify. Then fun stuff, haha.
